SCOBYOSA

The project Scobyosa delves into the realm of bacterial cellulose and its wonderful qualities and potential.
Derived from the natural fermentation process of yeasts and bacteria in sweetened tea, the bacteria convert sugars into an organic material: bacterial cellulose. Its appearance possesses an intriguing, otherworldly appearance that simultaneously captivates and challenges.

The installation demonstrates the collaborative abilities of the symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) and the transformative potential of bacterial cellulose. Serving as an invitation to challenge conventional perspectives on organic materials, highlighting the importance of reevaluating our relationship with materials and our understanding of waste in the context of sustainability and interconnectedness

In the Kombucha industry, bacterial cellulose is a by-product, losing its value.
The material holds properties that respond to different senses, allowing the material to be experienced in different ways and making its value transparent

magic of the eggshell

The Netherlands is world champion in exporting eggs.
Of domestic leg, the Netherlands exports 415.3 thousand tons per year.
The shell of the egg is regularly discarderd in household waste,
although it is a valuable material with great potential.
Magic of the Eggshell shows how a material’s lifespan can be prolonged.

Biodegradable urn

Eggshells consist largely of calcium carbonate, which is beneficial for agriculture and often used as fertilizer.
The egg has always held a symbolic significane, it’s a symbol of creation and the revival of nature,
it embodies the idea of rebirth and the cycles of life.

In the project ‘Magic of the Eggshell’ discarded eggshells from a local bakery are processed into
biogradable urns from a ceramic-like material.

Scrub soap bar from crushed eggshells

The egg has a thin layer in the inside of the shell; the membrane. This membrane contains collagen, which is often referred to as the anti-ageing ingredient in skin care, it improves skin elasticity and ability to retain moisture.
The choice to implement this membrane in a soap bar came very naturally, the crushed eggshells gives it a gentle scrub for the body.

The egg always held a particular symbolic significance, it has become a symbol of creation, fertility, infinity, and the revival of nature. It embodies the idea of rebirth and the cycles of life, which is visible it its form too; no beginnen and no end.

SCOBYOSA ROUND THE TABLE: beyond the beverage

‘Beyond the beverage’ is a sensorial experience of Kombucha’s culture and its versatility at the dinner table.

Symbiosis is a beautiful dance between organisms, while we all experience symbioses in daily life, taking time to reflect on the deeper interconnectedness of all things is not always foremost in our minds.

Kombucha is more than a beverage: it holds properties that have a wide range of applications and responds to different senses. During ‘beyond the beverage’ Anne Visser will guide you through a sensorial experience of Kombucha’s culture and its versatility at the dinner table, introducing edibles and beauty rituals from one and the same culture!

connecting materials

Intrigued by the way the material moves with light and creates beautiful hues and textures, I connect Flexible Furniture Linoleum with wood and metal in a controlled way. By doing so, I show the contrast of the linoleum with other materials and how they interact. This creates interesting landscapes which makes it possible to be used for a variety of purposes.

WDKA X Forbo
Assignment, collaboration with Forbo.
Forbo is the global leader in the market for linoleum, a natural material made from linseed oil, pine resin, wood flour and limestone, as well as jute and pigments. We are most familiar with it as a flooring material in public spaces, due to its durability. The flexible furniture linoleum offers a thinner and more flexible version as opposed to the regular linoleum flooring, and is intended to be used within the context of furniture and interior.

Obsessive Material Relationships

While studying Product Design (2020-2023), where I was trained to make products, I grew more interested in how people interact with products and objects, as well as the different ways that relationships with objects can be formed.

Research question: ‘How do obsessive collectors and hoarders give value to objects and what do they mean to them?‘
